On January 3, 2010, I received sad news from the Blackhawk Chapter. Illinois Regional Manager David Reid died unexpectedly on New Years Day. Dave had been at his Mothers in Michigan over the holidays and was loading his family car for the trip back to Chicago. Dave either had a heart attack or an aneurysm. Whatever it was, apparently his death was instantaneous and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Dave served a very important job in the Upper Mississippi Valley Zone of the Studebaker Drivers Club. He was the Regional Manager for the entire state of Illinois, which includes five chapters. Besides wearing his SDC hat, he was the Blackhawk Chapters newsletter editor for 16 years, having just handed the reigns over to Don Cuddihee, Jr. He was also their Membership Director and I believe that over the years he was the glue that held their chapter together.
Dave had many health issues the last few years but that did not stop him from helping with SDC auctions at the International Meets. He was our scribe while judging vehicles at the Upper Mississippi Valley Zone Meet last year. Dave was a “kid” within the SDC as he was only 61 years old.
Dave’s tag line was always “keep the greasy side down”, who could top that advice?
Well, perhaps he did with this alternate sign off line... "Peas... as in whirled peas". He will forever leave a void.
If God is looking for some organizational help in heaven, his man just arrived!
