2008 celebrates the 30th year of our existence. Let's make an extra effort to get our cars out & about this year and make a goal of signing up new members!!!

Our featured website of the month: Do you think you've seen it all? Here is a site that will show you some really weird inventions and patents.

Our members all are required to belong to the

Studebaker Drivers Club !

We are located in the Quad Cities of Davenport & Bettendorf, Iowa
and Rock Island, Moline, & East Moline, Illinois.
Yes we know that’s five cities, but that’s the way it is.

To learn more about our Quad Cities, contact the Convention & Visitor & Bureau.

If you want to look around the area via web cam... click here

We are always looking for new members and you do not need to own a Studebaker to join.  In fact, we'll be glad to help you find the Studebaker of your dreams!  Interested? Just contact one of our officers listed below.

Our monthly meetings are normally held on the 4th Monday of the
month at 7:00PM at the Deere Wiman Carriage House
located at 817 11th Avenue in Moline, Illinois.

Are you risking engine damage with the oil you are using???

Have you changed the oil in your Stude yet this Spring? Did you use some oil you had on the shelf from last year, or did you buy new? If you bought new, YOU MAY BE RISKING THE DESTRUCTION OF YOUR STUDEBAKER ENGINE!  Every time we turn around something else threatens to hurt our old cars. The latest is that someone found out that Zink and Phosphorus in engine oils can lessen the efficiency of catalytic converters. Guess what, now most of those two additives are gone. Do you know what they did for our engines? They prevented wear on sliding surfaces (cam to lifter). New cars have roller bearings and don't need the same protection we do. Several articles have been written on this problem, I am going to give you some facts that appeared in the AVANTI magazine [Fall-Winter 2007].

There is a 1977 SAE Journal paper titled "Cam and Lifter Wear as Affected by Engine Oil ZDP Concentration and Type". Briefly it said Use oils that have at least 0.12% Zink content. Check the API seal and look for CI-4 and CI-4 Plus. Avoid CJ-4 as the additives we need have been reduced. The AVANTI Magazine article suggested 15w-40 Ci-4/Plus "Dino" and rated as

"Best"

Cummins/Valvoline Premium Blue Classic

Pennzoil Long Life

Chevron Delo 400 (not "LE")

Kendall Super D3

76 Gardol QLT

"Good"

NAPA Universal Fleet Plus

Caterpillar DEO

John Deere Plus-50

Lucas 15/40 Magnum

Also recommended:

Shell Rotella T Synthetic

Cummons/Valvoline Premium Blue Syn Classic

Red Line Diesel Synthetic

BUT, they caution that by the time you get to the store, these too may have been re-formulated, DO YOUR RESEARCH!

Straight 30 weight was the oil of choice when our cars were new, and is still a good choice for our collector cars.

Your webmaster attended an interesting seminar put on by the Wisconsin Region of the SDC last Winter. A fellow SDC member presented an interesting program on an additive for our oil that contains the Zink and Phosphorus compounds that we need. The product is called ZDDPlus. It comes in 4 ounce bottles and the manufacturer recommends that you buy the high quality oil of your choice and with each change, add one of their bottles of additive. These bottles retail for about $10.00 each at this writing. [You can get them for $9 by mentioning that you are an SDC member!] Feel free to check out their website at www.zddplus.com/. I do not know of any local retailer, but I ordered mine off of their website.

There are other additives out there as well. Look around and see what may work best for you. BUT REMEMBER BY DOING NOTHING, THE ENGINE YOU MAY WRECK WILL BE YOURS!

We still need someone to provide snacks for our meeting on  November 24.

If you have not done this in the past... It is your turn!

Sign up at next month's meeting, or contact your president.

Our 30th anniversary shirts are in and were distributed at our April 28th meeting. If you were unable to attend, contact Duane Miller and make arrangements to pick up yours!

FOR SALE: 1948 Studebaker Commander Starlight Coupe. This car was restored by it's owner very few years ago, at that time the engine was rebuilt and it has only traveled about 200 miles since. The owner has since died and his wife has assigned the task of selling it to their Son. This is a nice amateur restoration, very little filler is apparent, there are a few minor dings that escaped detection until the final paint was applied. This was a green car, but is now maroon, but firewall, door jambs, etc. are all painted maroon. New rubber was installed. The interior was not replaced but is very serviceable as it is. The car has it's radio, Commander 6 cylinder engine and 3 speed O.D. transmission. When we checked it out (cold with snow on the ground), the engine cranked fine, but it would not fire for us. This car has been garaged since being restored, and Mom wants $11,000 for it. The car is parked in it's garage just west of Davenport, Iowa. Contact Jeff Verschoore, 306 Northbrook Drive, Davenport, IA 52806. Cell phone: 563+210-2741.03/08

FOR SALE: 1955 Studebaker President 4 door sedan. This car has virtually no rust. Glass, trim parts, wheel covers, etc. are ok. The interior is in poor condition. There was a knock in the engine before it seized (suspect broken rod). In addition, I have an engine and transmission supposedly from a 57 Hawk that was in running condition when removed about 10 years ago. Also there are many new interior items; headliner. seat covers, floor mats and exterior trim parts that are identical to original items. I have a clear title.  Since my age and physical condition are not going to let me restore this car myself, and I don't want this potentially very salvageable car to end up in a scrap heap, I wish to sell it to a Studebaker lover. The car is in my garage at 804 Glenwood Drive, Morrison,. IL. Contact Gene Osborn 815+772-2760.02/08
